8 Reasons Why It’s Okay for Christians To Want Thousands of Twitter Followers by Peter Guirguis
(even with only a few followers this article is helpful!)
In order to tell people about Jesus and in order tell the world about our AWESOME God, you’re going to need Twitter followers. So if you’re struggling with wanting to get more Twitter followers but aren’t sure if it’s the right thing to do, then here are to top 10 reasons why it’s okay to get them if your motives are good.
1) IT’S NOT ABOUT PRIDE
Most non-believers want to have lots of followers on Twitter for the obvious benefits. You’ve got to admit it, having lots of Twitter followers means that you’re popular, people look up to you, and who doesn’t want to be the popular kid on the block?
But if you’re a Christian who has your heart in the right place, then having thousands of Twitter followers isn’t about looking cool, it’s about sharing Jesus with others.
Having a heart for the lost will put things in perspective: Don’t promote yourself on Twitter, but promote Christ.
2) TO REACH AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE FOR JESUS
Ask any one of the evangelists that guest post on this blog about what their ministry dream is and each one will probably tell you, “To reach the world for Christ!”
But that dream isn’t limited to just evangelists, it should be the dream of every Christian. If you’ve been saved by God from the bondage of sin, then you’ll have that heart to want to reach as many people as possible for Jesus.
That’s why getting more Twitter followers is helpful since you can share you faith with your non-believin’ followers or you can get the Christian ones to retweet you.
3) TO BE SALT AND LIGHT
Jesus said, “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” – Mathew 5:14-16
In other words, what good is a light that’s hidden? And what good is sharing the gospel on Twitter if you don’t have any followers to share it with?
Even if you have just a few, not all will be receptive, not all will see your tweets, and very few will be open to the Gospel. That’s why you need to be growing your following so that as many people as possible can come to know Christ.
4) TO WIN THE LOST
This one is obvious but it had to be included in this list of reasons to get Twitter followers. The point of getting thousands of Twitter followers is to share Jesus with as many of them as possible.
5) TO WIN OVER BACKSLIDERS
You’d be surprised at the number of people that used to go to church and used to have a relationship with God but their relationship with both just went south.
Many people have left the church because of a bad experience, for losing their faith, or because the got angry at God for something.
If you develop a relationship with your Twitter followers and begin to dig deep, you’ll notice a door opening for you to share with those what have quit the church and God.
6) TO ANSWER QUESTIONS ABOUT THE FAITH
There are tons of people from all walks of life that have questions about Christianity. This would be a great opportunity for you to answer their questions. In the words of the apostle Peter: “Always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you with meekness and fear.” -1 Peter 3:15
7) TO HELP PROMOTE THE CHURCH
Let’s face it, the church faces a lot of criticism every day. Yes it has flaws, yes it sometimes hurts people, and yes it is far from perfect.
But despite all of its imperfections, Jesus still loves the church and we are the bride of Christ.
Why not promote whom Jesus loves?
Tell others on Twitter to come to your church. You never know if that person will say yes and God willing, he/she may end up giving their life to Christ down the road.
8) TO BE A GOOD VOICE FOR CHRISTIANS AMIDST THE HYPOCRITES
Let’s face it, there are lots of “Christians” that have given Christianity a bad name. Ask an unchurched person why they don’t go to church and many of them will tell you about a bad experience with a Christian who didn’t act very Christ-like.
So here’s your opportunity to show them the love of God. We need more people like you who love God and are serious about representing Him accurately. You just might be that person that God will use in order to turn a sinner to repentance.
